Pony Preschool

Welcome to Pony Preschool at Neverland Farm!

Pony Preschool is an introductory lesson program that is a great starting point for young athletes 3-6 years old.

Lessons are 30 minutes long.

Our primary focus is to build confidence on and around the pony, and the entire approach and structure of the program is designed to achieve this outcome.

The program teaches the basics of riding including:

  • Steering
  • Go
  • Stop
  • Trotting (posting, sitting, 2 point)

All of these core skills are taught through games, songs, and repetition.

We also go on trail rides (and parents are welcome to join us on foot to enjoy a nature walk and explore the forests around us!) and if the weather is not cooperative, we will host the lesson in our indoor riding arena or will sometimes do a horsemanship lesson in the barn.

Instruction

All lessons are led by Ali Welik. Ali has over 15 years of public school teaching experience at the high school and elementary grade levels. She is also a certified yoga instructor.

Over the last decade, Kelly and Ali have introduced hundreds of young riders to the sport through the Pony Preschool program. During that time they have honed the curriculum and program structure into something that not only allows for a wide range of adaptations and progression, but also provides a warm, supportive environment that leads to a very positive introduction and early development for the program’s participants.

In addition to the primary coach who leads each class, there are also 4 “helpers” (one for each rider in the class) who are there to lead the ponies, provide support and encouragement, and ultimately to help ensure a safe experience for everyone involved.

These helpers are made up of some of the older and more experienced riders at Neverland. It is an important part of our culture to have our older athletes participate in supporting the next generation of athletes.

How do I register?

When we begin registrations for the upcoming session, we give current clients first priority on the limited spots available. This means a 1-week period to claim a spot in the upcoming season.

All registrations are processed using our online enrollment software. A link will be sent when we open up registrations.

We always do our best to accommodate prior clients, however if you decide to pause for a season and then start up again, we cannot guarantee a spot will be available at that time.

After this initial early access is closed, we open any remaining spots up to our waiting list.

To be added to the waiting list, please complete this brief application form.

‣

What happens if I miss a lesson?

There are no makeup lessons or "rain dates" for any lessons that are missed in your session.

‣

Where are you located?

Please try to arrive 5-10 minutes before the start of your lesson. Ponies are already tacked up and ready for your child to hop on.

‣

What equipment does my child need?

Where to buy items on the list

We suggest Sandridge Saddlery, a local tack shop in our area. They have very knowledgeable and helpful staff and do offer all of our recommended brands and models of equipment listed below.

Helmet

Your little rider needs their own helmet.

We suggest the Tipperary helmet. It covers the back of the head very well and does not have a dial to tighten it.

Boots

Your child will also need boots with a heel. Blundstones are great for little feet, and they can wear them anywhere, not just to ride.

Pants

You do not NEED to get special riding pants for this stage of development, although you are always welcome! They make them in kids sizes are generally pretty darn cute!

Otherwise, leggings or sweatpants are going to be a better options than jeans.
